black skin, white masks review

One of the highlights of the new edition of Black Skin, White Masks is Paul Gilroy’s introduction. Definitely Wretched of the Earth. Fanon had a deep insight into the psychological impact of racism and white supremacy on black people. While many folks refer to this book and its central theme of psychoanalysis, I don't find the content as important as the emotiona. Start by marking “Black Skin, White Masks” as Want to Read: Error rating book. The whole book could be summarized in one chapter. Excellent book. Hailed for its scientific analysis and poetic grace when it was first published in … Black Skin, White Masks, his first effort, written just about a decade before his death at thirty-six in 1961, is of much less interest or importance. He was influential in the field of post-colonial studies and was perhaps the pre-eminent thinker of the 20th century on the issue of decolonization and the psychopathology of colonization. I don't know about editions but there's currently only 1 translation from french which apparently is not very good to the point where it changes some of Fanon's concepts. Not your average academical study. As someone without much formal training in psychology or sociology, and (more significantly) as a white middle-class male, it difficult for me to find a comfortable vantage from which to discuss this book -- and perhaps that uneasiness is part of the point. I don't know about editions but there's currently only 1 translation from french which apparently is not very good to the point where it changes some. HOWEVER despite my tiny IQ this is obviously a must read. 3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting points, god-awful to suffer through.

I am truly a drop of sun under the earth.” (p. 27)~ Thus Fanon reaches into the experience and meaning of the black man's alienation. Most importantly, people of colour also internalise and reproduce racist attitudes. A must read for anyone in order to understand the world as it is.

In Chapters Six and Seven, Fanon reflects on symbolic, material, interactional and sociopsychological factors to develop a ‘psychopathological and philosophical explanation of the state of being a Negro’ (6, emphasis in original). To reflect on the impacts of colonisation and whiteness on black people from the colonies (Fanon specifically focuses on the Antilles, where he is from), Black Skin, White Masks combines literary analysis, reflections on lived experiences and critical approaches to scholarly literature, especially from psychology and philosophy. Fanon takes Aimé Césaire's words and flies into the deep wounds of human suffering and commences an eternally readable work. His heritage as both a physician and a revolutionary is very evident in his prose. Gilroy also tackles some of the book’s argumentative, philosophical and even translation weaknesses to warn us about how ‘its rhetorical, poetic and surrealist elements should be read and interpreted with the greatest of care to retain the complexity and style of the original’ (x). Younger folks. If you don't want to go through the whole book; the introduction, the first chapter and the conclusion make the case about "the Black destiny" being "White".

In Black Skin, White Masks – first published in 1952 – Frantz Fanon offers a potent philosophical, clinical, literary and political analysis of the deep effects of racism and colonialism on the experiences, lives, minds and relationships of black people and people of colour. Conditioning of folks. Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2014. For me, Fanon’s book remains a relevant companion to more recent work, such as those of black feminist writers like Angela Davis, bell hooks and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, to name but a few who write in English across a very diverse body of literature. fanon takes psychoanalysis, phenomenology, and his incredible mind and goes amazing places; evades being bogged down by psychoanalytic dogma, while using its concepts to tease out a living constellation of power relations and problems of race and representation.

Who else has sold more than 200 million... A major influence on civil rights, anti-colonial, and black consciousness movements around the world. Fanon is completely honest, sparing no criticism from the Africans nor the Europeans.

Fanon's narrative showed me a whole other perspective that I would otherwise not have known about. This book explores the different dimensions of racism and the psychology of black people in a white supremacist world. There is plenty to critique in this book, and I think the urge to critique is heightened by the author's ubiquity. This book is incredibly honest and would put Sartre's introduction to "The Wretched of the Earth" in context. this book is a wound. it is a seminal text in (to borrow from berger) ways of seeing--and, along with audre lorde's, Fanon experienced racism throughout his childhood in Martinique, part of the French Empire, and then as a French soldier in the Second World War, fighting to free France from the Nazis and to help restore the racist French fascists to brutal and violent control over their empire. I insisted on that earlier translation because of Fanon's vocabulary. In contexts like Brazil and other postcolonial societies, those who denounce racism tend to be seen as over-sensitive and radical. Fanon dwells on the struggle of black man who is “enslaved by his inferiority” for being “white” that is to say for being accepted by the white and that white man who is lost in his superiority aims to “reach a human level” by adopting colonialist ideologies and practises. Some say his books are difficult to read but despite some of the medical/psychiatric termingologies he was always on point and what he writes is still relevant in today's world. Mannoni to question the author’s idea that colonisation happened because of a sense of inferiority and even a pre-existing unconscious desire among black people to be colonised and dependent on white Europeans. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness. The only parts I really don't connect with are Fanon's views of women and gay men. (Or should I read a biography?). Fiery he definitely is, but in an utterly refreshing and compelling sort of way. In Black Skin, White Masks – first published in 1952 – Frantz Fanon offers a potent philosophical, clinical, literary and political analysis of the deep effects of racism and colonialism on the experiences, lives, minds and relationships of black people and people of colour. There's a problem loading this menu right now. I was surprised to say the least, expecting a fiery argument in academic language, seen as Fanon is a proper academic mind. Moore-Gilbert 1996) in his first book. ", Honestly, I don’t know what’s pushing me to understand — okay, that’s a lie... hmm..

In the case of South Africa black people remain a psychological minority , despite being a numerical majority. Her exigent tone made sense when I read one of the book’s previous editions. The only parts I really don't connect with are Fanon's views of women and gay men. Review translated by Maya Nim (LN340) and Li Yiheng (Finance and Accounting) (Mandarin LN340, teacher Lijing Shi), Frantz Fanon的经典小说《黑皮肤,白面具》(Black Skin, White Masks)是一本传世佳作。
