I identified with her main character, forensic pathologist Kay Scarpetta, for multiple superficial reasons: Scarpetta attended medical school where I'd gone to college; Scarpetta attended law school where my mom did; Dr. Marcella Fierro, the former Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia, upon whom Scarpetta's character is based, gave a lecture in one of my classes in medical school. Although Charles Manson and the reasons for the horrific murders his followers carried out on his orders is described in detail, large parts of the story are merely a regurgitation of facts already known about the 1960's, such as the CIA's "Operation CHAOS" and FBI's Cointelpro - aimed at disrupting and discrediting various protest organisations of the time, the incredible tale of Louis Jolyon "Jolly" West - a noted psychiatrist who was involved the CIA's mi. Full access is for members only. For a book about Manson there is surprisingly little about Manson or the Manson Family. I do not understand the folks who say this is fast-paced, suspenseful, engrossing...Argh. I'm still not clear on where she was walking TOO even though there was some rubbish about a lecture. However, the ending leaves you pondering. "Chaos: Making a New Science" by James Gleick begins with the most basic knowledge of chaos as it is presented in weather. She describes his cars while wondering which one of his many rich man's to.
Thus, that makes conspiracies unlikely…but not impossible.
