While its disappointing that Intel won't be releasing desktop processors on its 10nm process, it's likely that just refining the 10nm manufacturing process again is what will allow Intel reach the high clock speeds that its next-generation processors are rumored to hit. The 7nm delay also echoes Intel’s struggles in getting its 10nm manufacturing process up and running. Ponte Vecchio, which was supposed to be Intel’s first 7nm chip and set to debut in early 2021, has been pushed to late 2021/early 2022. This delay has pushed the approximate arrival to the end of 2022 or early 2023.

Intel's latest black eye is being completely dumped by Apple, which, after building its own ARM design house for the iPhone and iPad, has announced plans to upscale its ARM chips to Mac laptops and desktops. After its smartphone insurgency, ARM chips quickly moved on Intel's territory by spreading to tablets and laptops. Is today’s ‘contingency plans’ actually a contingency or are they set and are nothing more than plausible deniability so they can say, “We told you this might happen” on a future call? Remember what Intel did when they announced 10nm shipments for revenue?
After all, Intel seems to believe that the 7nm problem is just a hiccup, has been identified, and will only result in a six month delay to its original roadmap. As such, Intel may be forced to turn to outside … And it might be quite a while until Intel can truly catch up. But this isn’t 2012, and Intel is facing threats across the spectrum. This is likely distressing news to anyone holding out hope that Intel would absolutely smash the competition in 2020, or anyone hoping that 10nm desktop would be the holy grail. OEMs can make and sell from day 1 and shortages are not an issue. A 7nm data-center processor is now expected to arrive the first half of 2023 rather than in 2022 as expected.
