Because what he says and does is so unlikely, it definitely lightened the mood and many scenes were not as shocking to me because of the silly tone he used.

I did really enjoy the film, though. Everything was filmed in black-and-white and the three directors are also the three main actors. The location shooting is pretty great. It's actually Belgian. Man Bites Dog isn't even about the killer, there isn't a true protagonist, it's more about morality of society and the media that is seen from the interactions of the crew and the killer.
MBD is obviously not for the faint of heart, but I think it is a fascinating film on several levels that could easily be dismissed as a more shallow cult spectacle. He was one of the people who threw a pie at Bill Gates. As a french fan of this film I feel sorry for people who can't fully appreciate Poelvoorde's great belgian accent and choice of words; he's really amazing in this one. Any other fans here?

Its a critique of violence and media and voyeurism, while being more guilty of all the things its critiquing than almost anything else in our society.
