msi gs66 review

Other versions span from $1,499 to $2,999, with CPU choices going up to the Core i9-10980HK and GPU options running down to the RTX 2060. Occasionally some benchmarking software will crash on a particular system, and it's not really an indictment of either, just an unseen conflict. You may unsubscribe from the newsletters at any time. The other new kid on the block, the RTX 2080 Super (Max-Q), is one of the most powerful GPUs you will find in a laptop. The downside is that there isn't a lot of room when it comes to keeping those high-end components cool.

It's a wholly different proposition from the GS65 we tested, which was a much less expensive configuration—and was also a lighter, slimmer machine, with a few more unique features to separate it from the pack.

It's a measurable difference, and you can feel it, but I expected the gain to be larger when I first lifted the GS66. As mentioned, the build of the GS66 Stealth is markedly different from the GS65. The Razer Blade, Predator Triton 500, and MSI GS66 Stealth were also in a dead heat in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. The MSI GS66 Stealth played at 56 fps, only a few frames behind its two rivals. Given this is Intel's top end chip, it doesn't really do enough to warrant the price premium over the likes of the i7 10750H that is also available in the same svelte chassis. As modern performance laptops are often tuned to be quieter and cooler out of the box, we tested the GS66 Stealth using both its default “Balanced” performance mode and its “Extreme” setting as well. In fact, in terms of gaming, if you compare this machine to a bulkier laptop running a standard RTX 2070, it's this system that often walks away with a black eye.

If you want all out performance, you'll want a decent gaming headset. With your screen refreshing more often, the action is being updated for your eyes more frequently (and physically looks less choppy), giving you a competitive edge. In fact in our testing it topped out at 4.9GHz (very briefly) and generally sat at 4.8GHz for single-core work. The original laptop in this line, 2018's GS65 Stealth Thin, had an uncomfortable amount of flex in its lid and around its keyboard when pressure was applied. After all, these must be a reason why so few vendors have tried this before.

That's five times the 60Hz refresh rate of most laptop panels, so this is quite a leap.

In short, it's Nvidia's approach to squeezing its more powerful GPUs into slim laptops by slightly throttling or down-tuning their power potential to restrict thermal output. This review is part of our ongoing roundup of the best gaming laptops. MSI GS66 Stealth Review: Low Profile, High Temperatures The MSI GS66 Stealth packs good looks, but it gets a little warm. The story here is a bit different: The GS66 Stealth pulls its weight and is outpaced only by three 17-inch laptops. The GPU matters more for gaming, so keep reading for graphics results. Physically, the build is a lot sturdier this time around, and just slightly thicker. At a glance, the two look the same, but they diverge in size, feel, and color scheme. That’s because MSI reduces the fan noise in this setting to keep users happy, which forces the laptop to throttle CPU performance to keep cool. Blurbusters has long been a pioneer in the push to reduce blurring during motion. Display: 15.6-inch IPS-level, 300Hz There is of course RGB lighting hidden underneath each chiclet style key, and a wealth of coloring and pulsing options are available if you're so inclined.

Actually, any content that is scrolled on the screen and refreshed can benefit from a reduction in the blurring we’ve all just gotten used to with LCD screens. Metro Exodus (RTX): 49fps Given that MSI made sure to note that it included a big 99.9-watt-hour battery (the largest allowed for plane travel) in this laptop, you could view the result as disappointing. It was nearly tack-sharp on the 300Hz MSI GS66 Stealth’s panel. Throw the fans on full blast (you can do this at any time by hitting Fn+F8) and this rises to 55dB which really is grating.

I play a lot of these multiplayer games, and am content with the 144Hz monitor of my home desktop, but the 300Hz display on this laptop is still nice.

There's a network of heatpipes to shift the heat away from the main components, with grills at the back and the sides to vent the hot air. In it, we put a stopwatch on test systems as they transcode a standard 12-minute clip of 4K video (the open-source Blender demo movie Tears of Steel) to a 1080p MP4 file. Image quality for your Zoom video conferences is fair—it’s a 720p video camera, the same resolution you’ll find on the vast majority of laptops out there. Executive Editor, Internally, the brand-new Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Super (Max-Q) GPU and Intel Core i7-10750H processor power the GS66 to super-high frame rates, shown on a blazing 300Hz display. When all cores were being pushed, performance would drop down over the length of the test—starting at 4.6GHz but quickly dropping to 3.6GHz or lower, for punishing tasks like rendering and video encoding. It's on the shorter end among these machines (which are relatively long-lived for gaming laptops), but still long enough to give you a good amount of time off the charger. As you read through the specs for the GS66 Stealth, remember that this is one of the thinnest gaming laptops available.

That Ryzen 9 4900HS doesn’t help either. It won't compete on the pure graphics power front, but is still valuable to have included as a comparison. PCWorld |. © 1996-2020 Ziff Davis, LLC. MSI likes to highlight that the GS66 Stealth’s speakers feature vents aimed at the user, while other laptops choose to fire the audio to the side or bounce it off the table. Having said that, most games will run just fine on RTX 2080 Super Max-Q (with it's 3,072 CUDA Cores), and 60fps should be within reach of all of them. The GS65 weighed in at 4.4 pounds, while the GS66 weighs 4.63 pounds. Rest assured the MSI can (and did, in my use) handle everyday workloads and multitasking without slowdown. While the “Extreme” setting creates more fan noise, we observed that the Gigabyte Aero 17, when set to its top performance setting, is even louder than the GS66 Stealth.

It offers great performance, but when you look at the rest of the picture there’s just a lot that’s left to be desired. Review: 2020 MSI GS66. Palm rejection, however, is quite good. With the additional weight and sturdier build, it has an added heft that makes it that much less portable, whereas I probably would have recommended the GS65 as the most portable 15-inch gaming laptop. Once you’re off the clock, it screams with all the might you’d expect from an Intel 10th-gen, 8-core Core i9-10980HK and Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Super Max-Q GPU. Even if the design is more standard, it's still good quality, and the fancy extras like the 300Hz screen will leave some salivating. We've seen RTX 2080 laptops before, but as it did on the desktop, Nvidia released "Super" versions of it and the RTX 2070, offering slightly better performance at better prices.
