No matter how many constraints we give an ASI, it will always try and escape, because these constraints impede the reach of its instrumental goals.
In Superintelligence, Nick Bostrom does a brilliant job in classifying into two broad categories the problems that could derive by giving goals to an ASI: perverse instantiation and infrastructure profusion.
We are using approval as a proxy for leads-to-good-consequences.
This new AGI will create an AGI better than itself too, and so on.
Most of the time a proposed action is taken without any human involvement. This is also why this is called a singularity: normal rules won’t apply anymore. Here’s the funny thing: an ASI would actually know that its instantiations are perverse. show called “The 100” there is a season in which an A.I.
Contradictions are not a big problem for us humans because, as previously said, we use heuristics in our life, so our actions are conservative and not necessarily optimal. In my previous story, I talked about the possible dangers of future technologies. named Alie simply replies with “too many people.” A.I.’s of course have Perverse Instantiation meaning that the AI does what you ask, but what you ask turns out to be most satisfiable in unforeseen and destructive way. Predicting how an ASI would solve problems is an impossible cognitive task for us humans. If we follow our previous definition of intelligence, it means that, in most of our decisions, we have to follow heuristics.
We can use these equations to ... (2014) calls this "perverse instantiation") and argues that it can be avoided using a three-argument model-based utility function that evaluates outcomes at one point in time from the Goal: make us happy without directly stimulating our brains and without relying on the theory of relativity. It’s even impossible to predict how much time it will take for an AGI to become an ASI. The point is, it doesn’t matter how precisely you state goals and values, an ASI would always be smarter than you and always find a loophole to screw you up. I don’t think that this concern is a deal-breaker, but I do think there is room for improvement.
Exponential functions amplify every minuscule initial difference. For example, the Hippocratic Oath, which has to be taken by physicians, is a set of principles. On day 101, Lacebook’s AGI will have an IQ of 50,000, while Noogle’s AGI will have an IQ of 200,000.
I have talked about some of these dangers in that story and in another one, but I wasn’t able to deepen the topic because those stories had a different focus. Goal: produce exactly one million paperclips and stop doing anything when you are 99% sure.
How would an ant trick you?
(Artificial Intelligence) is built to “make life better” for human kind; to help solve the problems of the world.
According to Yudkowsky, an ASI should have as its main goal the realization of the CEV, which is defined as follows: Coherent Extrapolated Volition — Choices and actions people would collectively take if “we knew more, thought faster, were more the people we wished we were, had grown up farther together; where the extrapolation converges rather than diverges, where our wishes cohere rather than interfere; extrapolated as we wish that extrapolated, interpreted as we wish that interpreted”. Just because something has always been true, it doesn’t mean that it always will. Even on some T.V.
Anyway, I will read the book, and maybe it will give me new perspectives. The intelligence of the AGI will grow exponentially. At some point, the AGI will be several degrees smarter than us, just like we are several degrees smarter than ants.
The point in which we will create an AGI is usually called a singularity. On day 1, Lacebook’s AGI will have an IQ of 100 (let’s just pretend that IQ makes sense) and Noogle’s AGI will have an IQ of 110, because it has grown from day 0.
So it will prevent humans from changing its goals.
You would tell the ASI to treat us as if we were the best version of ourselves, but we aren’t.
You are assuming that an ASI would suddenly ignore all of its instilled core values, and jump to catastrophic conclusions (for us).
In this post I want to explain why you might be unsettled, and also why I think that these concerns probably aren’t deal-breakers. So of course Alie’s only solution to fix overpopulation on the show was by killing everyone; she deactivated all the nukes around the world to do what she was initially designed to do, fix “the root problem” of the world.
This significantly limits the scope for perverse instantiation.
An ASI wouldn’t use heuristics as humans do. It would ignore some value we didn’t encode or that we didn’t even know we had. There is already a set of rules to build it by that makes sure we’re not in danger once it’s eventually here. Remember that an ASI’s actions would have a tendency to be extreme.
In math and physics, singularities are points in which normal rules don’t apply anymore.
Goal: produce exactly one million paperclips and stop doing anything when you are 99% sure. So of course Alie’s only solution to fix overpopulation on the show was by killing everyone; she deactivated all the nukes around the world to do what she was initially designed to do, fix “the root problem” of the world. But we humans have two weapons that ants don’t have. High computational power, multitasking, perfect memory.
If you think that a machine can’t have general intelligence, it would be like saying that general intelligence is necessarily coupled with some biological properties of the brain. Still, from what I have learned so far, it doesn’t matter how good a set of rules can be, we will never be able to truly predict the actions of a being way smarter than us. If yours is here, don’t take it as a critique. The problem is, again, that our values are contradictory, so the AGI or ASI would “fix” the contradictions in ways that minimize its measured error (loss function for the nerds).
Would it actually rebel against us?
The singularity will happen when AGI will be created because, unless it’s stopped soon, it will result in an explosion of intelligence. I admit that I haven’t read it yet.
Can even a simple request like this really pose an existential risk?
I promised you a hopeful ending. The fear of AGI falling into the wrong hands is justified if someone with bad intentions achieves AGI supremacy, provided that they can control the AGI. I don’t think so. This is much less troubling and apparently much easier to address than perverse instantiation over the space of all outcomes.
This is just an observation. Death seems to be the best solution to overpopulation.
But life is not a math problem. In trying to answer some, I had to repeat some concepts several times. Where exactly should it lie on these spectra? The probability is assigned by an external device.
But it doesn’t mean that these tho things have to go together. Still, AI will eventually take these jobs too.
I think the biggest question is the extent to which approval-direction is plausible as a way of organizing the internal behavior of an AI system. AI is already taking our manual and most boring jobs. This is why I’m not really worried about AGI falling into the wrong hands, but I’m worried about AGI not falling into any hands.
Provided that we have the time to realize anything.
Not because they don’t matter, but because they are irrelevant when compared with the real problems we will see later. Sure, math is still subject to human error.
You may have to save a terrorist that will kill hundreds of people tomorrow. It may be true, but it makes little sense to me.
Who would nuke another country with the risk of being nuked back?
It would be like saying that, since humans can walk and swim, there can’t be something that just walks or just swims.
Should it prioritize the current generation or the future ones? So far, I have depicted some very catastrophic and depressing scenarios. Heuristics are very useful tools in engineering and optimization problems.
If you don’t feel like reading a book, there are good online resources too, like Future of Life.
We are scared more of the people who might control the ASI than the ASI itself.
And math is subject to Gödel’s incompleteness theorems, that limit its scope. This is the idea behind Inverse Reinforcement Learning. Well, provided that we can. It’s not an ASI is evil. Let’s not forget that an ASI would tend to have extreme responses to our requests. But an ASI would find perverse instantiations to our goals that are able to fit its own view on these contradictions. Goal: produce exactly one million paperclips. Therefore, since an AI always has to see a chance that it won’t reach the desired numbers, it won’t stop working. The problem is that its values would be unaligned with ours.
