The Ryzen 5 series does a much better job at video editing and graphics designing, and have we mentioned that it’s even cheaper? If you compare the two, the Ryzen 5 3600 is much better than the Core i7 7700K. Both of these processors are priced at under $500, which is a high price to pay, especially because both are incredibly efficient for content creation and gaming.

Intel’s CPUs are a bit pricey, while AMD’s CPUs are a bit more on the budget side. Intel has already seen Ryzen 4000 U and is willing to say that Xe LP graphics in Tiger Lake will offer AAA gaming experience previously unseen laptops in this form factor. The first test was streaming 4K HDR H.265 video over Wi-Fi using VLC, with both models configured at the same brightness level. The AMD system in comparison, takes just 43 minutes to encode the video, and finishes with 38% of its battery remaining. The Ryzen 5 series may be cheaper, but it still can’t beat Intel’s i7 processors when it comes to pure gaming. The ringer in all this is Tiger Lake’s eventual support for LPDDR5/5400 and LPDDR4X/4267 memory. Core i5 vs. Their Accelerated Processing Units (APUs) come with Radeon graphics which are somewhat on par with Intel’s integrated graphics but might even be better. Today's test is an exciting one for that same reason. Both ship with RTX 2060 GPUs, 16GB of dual-channel DDR4 memory, 512GB M.2 SSDs and identical 1080p 144Hz IPS displays. Both are quad-core chips with Hyper-Threading and Iris Plus / Gen 11 graphics running at the same clock speed. We think if the rumors are true that Tiger Lake U will indeed “only” be a quad-core chip, AMD’s Ryzen 4000 U will easily have the edge.
The AMD model has two shared heatpipes for the APU, two shared heatpipes for the GPU, and two dedicated GPU heatpipes. This allows for some very interesting benchmarking: for the first time we can definitively do an apples-to-apples comparison of an AMD and Intel laptop configuration in the same design, from an OEM that has spent a significant amount of effort optimizing the experience of both. Here the clear advantage goes to the Ryzen configuration in the multi-thread test: with 72W of power available, the XMG Core 15 is the fastest Ryzen 7 4800H laptop we’ve tested, and it pulls 60% ahead of the Intel configuration with its 75W Core i7-10750H.

In today’s review we’ll be covering productivity performance, a look at thermals, and battery life. The internal layout for each model is largely the same in terms of peripheral locations: all the I/O, SSDs, battery, Wi-Fi card and fans are in the same location. All told, it looks like a pretty decent part. No crappy display here either. When you extrapolate this result, the AMD system would only last about 10 percent longer under a sustained high performance workload, but because it’s so much faster at a given power level, it can just do more in that time.

While these laptops are built from the same fundamental platform, as you might expect there are considerations made to optimize for AMD and Intel processors. Looking at the layouts, it doesn’t appear like one design is better than the other, there's simply a difference in approach that likely takes into consideration the strengths of each platform.

While no clock speeds were stated, you can see from the information Intel released Thursday that the Willow Cove cores in the new Tiger Lake chips will reach close to 5GHz, while the fastest Sunny Cove cores in Ice Lake ran out of gas at 4.1GHz.

Both models have a heatpipe that connects the left and right coolers. Intel’s new 11th-gen CPUs with the Willow Cove cores should hit far higher clock speeds than its 10th-gen CPU with the Sunny Cove cores. Not only that, but the Ryzen 5 Series are also future-based processors, meaning you could even fit in an RTX GPU.

With 8 cores on a 7nm chip, it holds the high ground for multi-core performance and simply runs far cooler than Intel’s 14nm 10th-gen Comet Lake H chips. Both companies make compelling products and have different advantages. They’re cheap, better at productivity, and even contain future-based processors. Both designs have direct cooling for both GPU and CPU VRMs, as cooling these components is very important. The AMD system is just 3 percent slower so for someone buying a system for a mixture of productivity, this margin may not be significant enough to warrant going exclusively with the Intel model, but for pure Photoshop users, the Intel system is faster in the Puget benchmark. While the laptop itself uses the same DDR4-3200 memory modules, we’re limited to DDR4-2933 per Intel’s memory spec.

For Adobe Premiere work, the AMD model is clearly the superior option. Intel i7 series has higher frequencies than the Ryzen 5 series, so if you’re building a gaming-only PC, the Intel i7 series is the better option. While this may change in the near future, once AMD solidifies its position as a viable laptop CPU maker, that's the current situation.

The AMD-based Core 15 also features DDR4-3200, meeting AMD’s memory spec. If you indeed need an 8-core powerhouse in a sub-three-pound laptop, your only choice will have the AMD logo on it.

In shorter, more boost-heavy workloads, it’s still advantageous to have the Ryzen configuration, although not to the same extent. But, in AMD Ryzen 5 Vs Intel I7 which CPU series comes out on top? There are other benefits. Laptop maker XMG recently reached out to offer their machines for testing, saying they offered both Ryzen Mobile 4000 and Intel laptops... using the same design and chassis!

A key factor here is that XMG doesn’t have an unbalanced line-up where the Core 15 Intel model receives a power boost, while the Core 15 AMD model is stuck at stock power. This isn’t a situation where Intel can simply raise the power limit to match AMD, as TongFang have also boosted the AMD part when designing these machines. Weaknesses: While generally OK, the Ryzen 3000 chip's main weakness shows when compared to Intel's 10th-gen Ice Lake chips, which has better all around performance from CPU to graphics. But that’s to be expected given TongFang has tuned each configuration to use as much power as is possible with this thermal design. Winner: Intel’s i7 series. For two-pass encodes, which are CPU-only, the AMD system held a 30 percent advantage, so if you want to up the quality of your exports, the margin will only grow in favor of AMD.
