Jenny Jump and Number Nine, two of Neill's best creations, both have major roles. A party sets out to investigate, consisting of Jenny Jump, The Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Sawhorse.
The palace of Glinda the Good is located not far away; from her Great Book of Records Glinda learns of the scalawagons' existence and their escape.
Bell-snickle is captured, and is cowed into agreeing to a new way of life: Jenny runs the monster through the turnstile of her style shop until it is reduced to a rubber stamp. Baum introduced pun-dependent humor into the Oz books from the start of the series; Neill carried punning farther than any other Oz writer.
The Scalawagons of Oz (1941) is the thirty-fifth in the series of Oz books created by L. Also on the negative side, John R. Neill is neither the best Oz writer nor the most careful, the latter clearly in evidence when he decides to place Glinda's palace in the CENTER of the Quadling Country, rather than on the edge of the Great Sandy Waste, the location L. My main gripe with this book is probably the very fact that it introduces the Scalawagons themselves. Ozma also uses the converted monster as a stopper, to stop trends she doesn't approve.
