Unfortunately, like many an allegory, myth and Shakespearean tragedy have warned us, power corrupts, and Selah’s bid to hold onto her prep school’s queen bee status brings serious consequences and a humbling lesson. She joins the Spades and becomes friends with the Spades’ leader, an enigmatic and scheming cheerleader named Selah. The kids even have a counsel of sorts made up of the leaders of the groups, that meet to deal with the school’s proclamations and deal with their internal conflicts. it’s so refreshing to be able to see such a complex, rich, and nuanced portrayal of black youth in such a well-crafted and promising universe. So, once I saw that, I was like, okay, maybe a movie is not — this idea isn’t totally formed, but it’s something I keep thinking about every time I start a project — maybe a movie isn’t what we think it is. That is until Selah strikes up a friendship with a transfer student, Paloma (Celeste O'Connor), a fresh-faced photographer trying to figure out where she fits in this cliquey new school. It’s a fun time, even as the darker sides of the factions begin to dominate. this film is GORGEOUS and everything i’ve dreamed of ive always wanted a dark drama like this with young Black girls that isn’t so violent or pointedly colorist. There are a few scenes where Poe breaks from the traditional beat-by-beat storytelling for a stylish interstitial scene, like when Selah and the cheerleading team tell the newly arrived Paloma how they address double standards by holding on to what little freedoms they have as high school girls.
