It starts off as an innocent rumour into something much more…. The novel moves quickly, making this a book you could easily devour in just a couple of sittings. Rumours are like seeds, scattered on the wind. I thought that I would be able to figure out who the killer was by the middle of the book. Alfie settles in well, seeming to make friends with some of his classmates, but Joanna herself is struggling to adjust to her new surroundings.

Suspicion falls on everyone.Joanna becomes obsessed with the case, pawing through decades-old records in an attempt to name the killer. How dangerous can one rumor become?

I like the exploration of the toxicity of rumors! **I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book**. It’s something that I don’t think I’ve read before in a novel, so it’s nice to see there is a twist and a new take on the thriller/mystery genre. .Rumor has it that a notorious killer, a woman who has been released from prison years after her brutal crime, is living under a new identity in Joanna’s seaside town. Rumour has it that a notorious child killer is living under a new identity, in their sleepy little town of Flinstead-on-Sea. But one casual comment leads to another and now there’s no going back . ( Log Out /  The circle of mothers at the school gates with their schedules and charts with Joanna looking in on the outside. This is Lesley Kara’s first novel and it doesn’t show at all.

Lesley Kara. The character of Joanna is brilliantly written. Alfie was one of my favourite characters, I thought he was brilliant and loved reading Joanna’s bond with her son. The murderer in The Rumor is based on a real crime. Very cleverly done. How something we can just hear randomly can shape into something much more.

Everything was revealed in a showdown that I can only describe as epic. The way she writes her characters, the way she establishes the world around them is marvellous. I would give The Rumor an Adult rating. One afternoon while she’s waiting for Alfie to come out of school, she strikes up a conversation with a group of women who are also waiting to collect their children. There is sex. . I think this is a really interesting premise for a novel: a child killer living in a town with a new identity. It was so brilliant, even almost gothic at times I thought, and it was a brilliant way of creating the tense and mysterious atmosphere in the story. One of Kara’s strengths for me was the way she wrote about the setting and the weather.

This book reminded me of Broadchurch (a small seaside town) with a mix of Big Little Lies (the mother’s at the school gates, the babysitting circle, etc) and I loved it. Yeah, well, that didn’t happen. I loved the theme of community being played throughout, especially in such a small town and the high levels of suspicion and tension played nicely. I am under no obligation to leave positive reviews. It doesn’t matter if they’re true or false. But when she tries to impress them by repeating a rumor she overheard at the school gates, there’s no going back. 1 bestseller, and the critically acclaimed Who Did You Tell?.Her third novel, The Dare, is coming soon. There was no lag, and there were no dropped or missing storylines. I couldn’t put the book down because I needed to know what was going to happen. It’s a brilliant ending that doesn’t leave any open-endings or loads of room for interpretation. When I read the blurb, I thought that it was going to be a run of the mill suspense/thriller/mystery. Someone in town isn’t who she seems to be. A chillingly credible thriller that examines issues of guilt, redemption and the pernicious effects of neighbourhood gossip, The Rumour takes its inspiration from real-life cases of released murderers and the effect their presence has on the wider community. I like books based on true events. She’s hoping to give the boy a fresh start after some rather nasty bullying he experienced in London, and she thinks living near her mother in a quieter place might do him some good. The cover is great and gripping, the title is interesting but doesn’t give too much away and the plot sounds brilliant and how can I resist? For the most part, she’s right.
