Shonibare uses wry citations of Western art history and literature to question the validity of contemporary cultural and national identities. He was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in 2019 and has added the title to his professional name. The British Library is an exploration of the diversity of British identity through a conceptually poetic lens. Recent major works include Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle, the first commission on the Fourth Plinth (2010-2012) to reflect specifically on the historical symbolism of Trafalgar Square. He studied Fine Art, first at the Byam Shaw School of Art (1984–1989) and then at Goldsmiths, University of London (1989–1991) where he received his MFA. In 2018 he was awarded the decoration of Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, or CBE.

Working in painting, sculpture, photography, film and installation, Shonibare’s work examines race, class and the construction of cultural identity through a sharp political commentary of the tangled interrelationship between Africa and Europe and their respective economic and political histories. He returned to the UK to study Fine Art at Byam Shaw School of Art, London and Goldsmiths College, London, where he received his Master’s in Fine Art. In 2002 Okwui Enwezor commissioned Shonibare for documenta XI, where he created his most recognised work: Gallantry and Criminal Conversation, which launched him on the international stage. The British Library is a celebration of the diversity of the British population, containing 6,328 books bound in ‘Dutch wax print’, a fabric characteristically used by the artist in his work. The space gives a voice to both those who have objected to British immigration and those 'foreigners' who have made a valuable contribution to the nation’s history. Yinka Shonibare CBE was born, studied and lives in London, but grew up in Lagos, Nigeria. The work comprises 6,328 secondhand books covered in colourful batik fabric and presented on library shelves.
