Some ordinances are essential to our salvation. I have heard some very complicated answers to that, involving various distinctions, divisions, and dispensations of the word of Christ. The Bible's view is quite different... "There is one mediator between God and men" and he became "a ransom for all" and through him God "desires all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth" (1Timothy 2:4-6). However the correct answer is quite simple. Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. When men live worthy to obtain the Aaronic and Melchizedek Priesthoods and “[magnify] their calling,” God promises they will be “sanctified by the Spirit unto the renewing of their bodies.” They become heirs of the promises made to Moses, Aaron, and Abraham. These same have the unbreakable promise of eternal life (John 6:40, 47) and shall never perish (John 3:16) but not so with those who refuse to believe (John 3:36b). Nobody in their right mind would want to have that kind of relationship with God, would they? “The Final Judgment is not just an evaluation of a sum total of good and evil acts—what we have done,” taught Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. For whomever the blood was shed, to them the covenant is ratified. So a biblical covenant, like a marriage covenant, has two joined together in agreement where no man can separate and the two become one as the man was to “leave and cleave” to his wife.

It simply says “Abram went, as the Lord had told him” (Gen 12:4a). How can a covenant not apply to one for whom the blood of the covenant was shed? The other covenant is our personal contract with God. Our involvement and relationship with God is determined by our covenant with God, a covenant not invented or negotiated by us but mediated to us from God by Christ. How can a covenant not apply to one who is condemned for not obeying it?
